En quelques jours, les messages négatifs ont fleuri sur son profil Google, qui ne comptait que des commentaires très élogieux jusqu'à présent. Au secrétariat du cabinet, les insultes se sont également multipliées au téléphone, sans pour autant aller jusqu'aux menaces. L'agence régionale de santé aurait également reçu de nombreux appels pour dénoncer l'attitude du Dr Mercier. Pourquoi une telle défiance ? Courant janvier, le médecin a pris la décision de refuser les patients non vaccinés ou ne pouvant présenter un test de dépistage au Covid-19 négatif, datant de moins de 24 heures. Une affiche épinglée sur la porte de son cabinet en informait les patients. L'initiative, relayée par le journal « L'Union » a immédiatement déclenché une vive polémique, bien au-delà de la patientèle du Dr Mercier. Depuis, il a retiré cette affiche par souci d'apaisement. Soutenu par sa patientèle Son souci premier, dit-il, est de protéger ses patients fragiles, en particulier les personnes immunodéprimées, qu'il ne veut pas exposer à un risque de contamination. En aucun cas dit-il, il n'est question de refus de soins. Les patients qui prennent rendez-vous au secrétariat sont informés de la démarche du médecin. S'ils ne sont pas vaccinés, ils sont invités à se faire tester à la pharmacie située en face du cabinet, juste avant leur consultation, insiste le secrétariat du généraliste. Le Dr Mercier assure par ailleurs qu'il ne refuse pas les cas d'urgence. Ses patients l'ont d'ailleurs bien compris, affirme-t-il. Il dit avoir reçu de nombreux messages de soutien de leur part, qui se disent rassurés de venir en consultation en toute sécurité (le médecin ne reçoit que sur rendez-vous). Le Dr Mercier regrette de ne pouvoir en dire autant de la part de ses confrères, qu'il juge étrangement silencieux à son égard, alors qu'il en espérait un peu de soutien. Il reconnaît avoir été contacté par le Conseil départemental de l'Ordre de la Marne, qui lui aurait rappelé la désaprobation de l'institution, tout en lui faisant part de sa compréhension et sans le menacer de sanction. Un débat au sein de la profession Le généraliste n'est pas le seul à s'interroger sur la sécurité de ses patients au cabinet. Au mois d'août dernier, un généraliste de la Sarthe avait déjà tenté d'imposer le passe sanitaire à son cabinet, avant d'être réprimandé par son Conseil départemental. Mais le sujet avait fait débat au sein de la profession. « La question d’imposer le passe sanitaire est posée par un certain nombre de confrères et c’est légitime », avait reconnu le Dr Luc Duquesnel, interrogé par « le Quotidien ». Pour le président des Généralistes-CSMF, « on peut comprendre leur réaction face à des patients qui refusent de se faire vacciner et qui font courir un risque à l’ensemble de la population ». Selon lui, un confrère peut « tout à fait dire à un patient non vacciné qu’il refuse d’être son médecin traitant et le signaler à l’Ordre », du moment que la permanence des soins est assurée et que les cas d'urgence sont pris en charge. C'est bien dans ce cadre que le Dr Mercier envisageait d'appliquer cette mesure de prévention. À l'origine de cette polémique, il en veut beaucoup aux réseaux sociaux qu'il accuse d'attiser la haine. En effet, un robot peut généralement rouler, marcher, ou encore voler, mais rarement faire tout cela à la fois.
